Verisk VIN Finder

Missing commercial vehicles are costing you every day.

Vehicle theft is on the rise. In 2022, more than a million vehicles were reported stolen1, an increase of 7% over 2021.

Now more than ever, we must locate tractors, trailers, and other commercial vehicles quickly to mitigate lost revenue and expense.

Locating lost commercial vehicles is a challenge

Stolen fleet vehicles can be anywhere, and the search can be lengthy and expensive when tracking down various data points or contacting local law enforcement to locate missing assets before they disappear for good.

Expenses only increase with time

Companies don’t just lose revenue when a commercial vehicle is missing. They also incur storage fees, which increase the longer it sits on an impound lot.

Verisk VIN Finder accelerates your search

VIN Finder is an automated program that compares your fleet VINs to our extensive data and generates notifications for all matches. In partnership with ClaimSearch®, CargoNet™, and the National Insurance Crime Bureau (NICB), VIN Finder combs through vast datasets to help you locate missing fleet vehicles. With VIN Finder, you can continuously monitor your fleet VINs to help recover lost tractors, trailers, and commercial vehicles quickly and efficiently—without the need to search through local police records or other municipal information.

Verisk VIN Finder Use Cases

Prior to subscribing to VIN Finder a fleet company had a vehicle stolen which was recovered however law enforcement never removed it from the National Crime Information Center (NCIC) which still showed the vehicle as stolen. Unbeknownst to law enforcement they pulled over a family and yanked them out of the car at gunpoint.

With VIN Finder, the fleet company would have been informed that the vehicle was still listed as stolen in the law enforcement database, preventing the catastrophic error of leasing it out. This notification would have ensured that all recovery details are accurately updated, thereby avoiding severe legal and reputational risks. If VIN Finder was utilized it could have spared the family from the traumatic experience and safeguarded the company from potential liability.

After a large rental fleet's truck went missing for nearly two years, it remained lost and accumulated storage fees in a tow yard. Despite their efforts, the company couldn't locate the vehicle on their own. Once they subscribed to VIN Finder, in one day our notification was the first to inform them of the truck's location, leading to its successful recovery and a negotiated release, transforming a significant potential loss into a salvaged asset. Additionally, they were able to get the vehicle back in their fleet generating revenue again.

One of our subscribers had a vehicle go missing, but VIN Finder alerted them to its location weeks before the tow yard provided written notification via snail mail and prevented them from selling the vehicle at auction. This timely notification allowed them to act quickly, recover the vehicle, and avoid a costly auction loss. By preventing the sale, our technology saved the company over $20,000 and preserved their valuable asset.
