Emerging Risk: Intelligence Brief on Current Fictitious Pickup Trends

CargoNet recorded 94 more fictitious cargo pickups in 2022 compared to the year prior. Fictitious pickups are a highly specialized form of cargo theft that requires skill in document forgery and internet-based fraud in addition to: (a) a location that can store one or more truckloads of goods and (b) fence contacts that can safely sell this product.

Fictitious pickup activity from organized crime groups operating near Chicago and in South Florida has been notable, but activity from Los Angeles-based groups has risen sharply in recent months.
